Save £10 when you buy a set of Sub Zero thermal underwear Factor 1 base layers. The pack consists of a unisex thermal long sleeve top and a pair of unisex thermal bloo john leggings, both in colour black. Sizes range from XSmall to XXLarge and will fit most body shapes with their unisex design.
Thermal Underwear Factor 1 Base Layers
Manufactured in the UK by Sub Zero, this thermal underwear is one of the most technical range of base layers available. They are produced from a lightweight rib 100% Polyamide fabric designed to be worn next to the body. Each fibre is impregnated with a hydrophilic finish that transports moisture away from the skin and disperses it over a large area of the outer layer of the fabric so it can easily evaporate. This provides a warm dry micro-climate next to the skin that gives you greater performance and activity longevity. An ideal thermal base layer system for cycling, walking & hiking, skiing, running, golf and climbing.

With winter fast approaching the elderly are especially at risk from health complications caused by cold temperatures. Keeping warm is a priority, but with high energy costs a lot of pensioners on limited incomes worry about heating their properties.
Keeping warm is not just about having your central heating on 24 hours. There are a number of practical and cost efficient techniques that the elderly can employ to beat low winter temperatures:
Try and move at least once an hour to generate body heat.
Wear lots of thin layers of clothing rather than a few thick layers to trap body heat.
Eating a hot meal or drinking a hot drink will also help maintain your core temperature.
At night use an energy efficient electric blanket in bed.
Insulate your loft to reduce the amount of heat lost.
Wear thermal underwear during the day and at night.
Meraklon Thermal Underwear
Here at Sub Zero we have been manufacturing thermal underwear in the UK for over 40 years and we know a thing or two about keeping warm. We are best known for our technical base layers and mid layers for outdoor adventure sports but we also produce a range of mid layer thermal underwear ideal for the elderly who need to keep warm in a sedentary environment.

Our Meraklon thermal underwear range does not have an athletic cut synonymous with our other ranges that make it suitable for pensioners. The inside face of the fabric is heavily brushed providing a super-soft fleece lining next to the skin, whilst the outer face of the fabric has a handle not too dissimilar to brushed cotton. All of our tops are cut long and our leggings have a high waist to avoid lower back exposure when sitting down.
Washing instructions couldn’t be more simpler. The water temperature should not exceed 50C or 120F and either line dry or pop close to a radiator. Due to the synthetic nature of the yarn, Meraklon thermal underwear dries very quickly and does not need ironing.
With the summer officially over and the threat of early morning frosts ever present, you would be wise to wrap up warm before attempting your journey in to work. This is especially important if you are walking or braving the roads on your bicycle.
Thermal Underwear to Keep You Warm
The key to keeping warm is to wear a number of thin layers of clothing – the layering system. The idea is to trap layers of warm air inbetween the different layers, as it is the air that is actually the insulator not the fabric. If you get too warm you can easily remove an item of clothing.
The first thing to remember is not to wear cotton thermal underwear in your layering system. Cotton absorbs many times its own weight in water but requires a lot of energy to release it – this is why you have cotton towels and why it also takes them so long to dry. You may be warm whilst you are walking but as soon as you stop you will start to get very cold as your body heat is used to evaporate the moisture stored within the cotton fabric.
To keep warm without a chill you want to be wearing synthetic thermal underwear such as Sub Zero Factor 1 base layer.

These are manufactured in the UK from a polyamide yarn that is extremely soft but very durable. It has a moisture loving treatment impregnated in to the yarn that actively transports moisture away from the skin to the outer layer of your clothing so it can quickly evaporate. If it is really cold then use in conjunction with Sub Zero Factor 2 Mid Layer thermal underwear, one of the warmest thermal underwear ranges available on the market today.
On Sunday 19th September 3 intrepid but stupid people from the Sub Zero Thermal Underwear team ran The Beast trail race. The event consisted of 2 laps of a 5 mile cross country course that included steep hills, water, mud, and 32 obstacles usually tackled by horses!
Thermal underwear was our secret weapon!
After a tentative start the team soon got up to speed. Usually the water jumps at this time of year are warm after being baked by the summer sun but for a few days prior to the event the temperature had been very cool and the water was freezing. Luckily we were wearing Factor 1 Plus Long Sleeve thermal underwear tops that at least kept our top half warm. Our legs on the other hand were left open to the elements apart from Rach who wisely wore Factor 1 Bloo John thermal underwear leggings. A lesson learnt for next year.
With adrenalin pumping through our system we managed to complete the second lap quicker than the first. A few tumbles were witnessed as the obstacles were harder to negotiate with heavy trainers and tired legs, but we jumped back up and plodded on. The final finish times were reasonable for the event – 1:24:15, 1:28:39, 1:28:39.
