Thwaites Free Walking App Helps Thirsty Hikers

January 29th, 2013

Northern brewer Thwaites has launched a free to download Wainwright App that brings together two of the UK’s favourite pastimes – walking and visiting the pub.

Tapping into the 30,000 plus Google searches for pub walks, the new Wainwright App will bring together Thwaites’ own database of Wainwright stockists with Cask Marque’s 8,000 pubs and 6,000 walks from Walking World to deliver searchable pub walks.

Wainwright, the 4.1% ABV golden ale, is now the UK’s fastest growing cask ale in the Top 25 beer brands and the App mirrors Thwaites’ Wainwright brand imagery and the strapline ‘A Breath of Fresh Ale’. It was named after Alfred Wainwright, author of the famous Lake District walking guidebooks, who was born in the brewer’s home town.

The App uses the latest GPRS technology and comprehensive data resources and is able to locate pubs within half a mile of a recognised walk from the Walking World list of recommended walks. Walks can be selected based on walk type, length and current proximity.  The App also displays two levels of pub information as part of its functionality – basic and enhanced. Basic shows just the pub name, location and telephone number. Enhanced displays more information to the walker such as opening times, pub description, pub images and a website link. Only pubs stocking Wainwright are eligible to gain enhanced status on the App.

Lee Williams, marketing manager at Thwaites, said, “The Wainwright Pub Walking App successfully combines two British loves – walking and pubs. It’s a useful tool designed to find either a walk or a pub or both, wherever you are in the UK. By accessing masses of accurate walking data from Walking World and pubs serving quality cask ales from Cask Marque combined with our own data on pubs serving Wainwright, this is a very comprehensive list of walks and pubs. It’s also fully interactive and supportive of the pub trade so landlords and stockists of Wainwright can upload their details via the Add Your Pub section on the App.

The Wainwright Pub Walking App is available free to download via the Apple Store.

Being Drinkaware is an obvious consideration. Not so obvious is the need to be well-prepared for what might appear to be easy country walks. Bad weather, short daylight hours and treacherous ground underfoot can all offer challenges to walkers’ comfort and safety even when they’re not exploring hills and mountains. Keep your map and compass handy and to make sure your rucksack is packed with:

  1. Extra warm clothing such as a fleece jacket
  2. Spare pair of walking socks
  3. Thermal gloves or mittens
  4. Thermal hat or balaclava
  5. Hand or head torch

Sub Zero Merino Wool Base Layer Wins TGO Recommended

January 23rd, 2013

Sub Zero mens merino wool base layer worn by a mountaineer in the Alps

In the February 2013 issue of The Great Outdoors Magazine (TGO), Chris Townsend picks out the best base layers for winter hill walking.  Our Sub Zero Merino wool base layer thermals were tested by Chris and received 4.5 /5 stars and were highly recommended.

These merino wool base layers are produced from premium Spanish merino wool spun around a Lycra core for increased robustness, superior washing properties, and greater stretch providing a much closer fit.

The manufacturing process takes place on Shima Seiki seamless machines that sees the whole garment knitted without seams – it basically falls of the knitting machine finished. All we have to do is apply the heat seal logo and a neck tab with the washing instruction.

Merino Wool Base Layer Review

Chris Towsend writes:

“This close-fitting, warm and comfortable top is by far the lightest merino wool garment tested and also the only garment made in the UK. It’s quite compact as well and so suitable for carrying in the pack as a spare or for camp wear. It’s also unusual in that it’s completely seamless, being made with a process called ‘whole body ‘ knitting.

The front and back are plain knit while the sides, shoulders and sleeves are rib knit, which makes them very stretchy. Combined with a little Lycra this makes for a garment that hugs the body without being restrictive. This close fit makes the top quite warm even though the wool is quite thin.

The sleeves have thumb loops and extend over the backs of the hands so there is on gap with gloves and they can’t ride up. The sleeves can be pushed up in warm weather, There’s an extended back and the top as a whole is longer than most so there’s no chance of it separating from your trousers.”

Extremities Hot Bags Thermal Booster Mitts Now In Stock

January 11th, 2013

Extremities Hot Bags by Terra Nova are ideal mitts for anyone looking for lightweight thermal windproof mitts that can be stuffed in to jacket pockets. If it is very cold, they are great as a booster mitt worn over the top of other gloves or as a warm liner glove under a waterproof mitt such as the Extremities Guide Tuff Bags.

The adoption of Primaloft as the filling means they will continue to insulate even when wet, allowing your hands to keep warm and comfortable even under the most extreme conditions.

These gloves are very popular with mountaineers and winter walkers as they take up very little space and add very little extra weight, offering extra protection if the temperature starts to drop and if caught in snow showers.

Get Walking Fit In 2013

January 8th, 2013

Pull on your boots, pack your rucksack and start planning now to make the most of the UK’s big push for everybody to enjoy walking. If the gym has been your route to fitness, then look outdoors to make the most of what the UK’s countryside can offer. We’ve got all the gear you’ll need to stay warm, comfortable and safe even in the hills.

Get Walking Week, 4 – 11 May 2013, is Ramblers’ short walks festival designed to help the nation discover the wonder of walking. Get Walking Week is part of 2013’s Britain on Foot campaign which is a year-long call to action to get the British public fitter, healthier and happier in the great outdoors. In Wales during the weekend of 4-6 May, Ramblers Cymru will be hosting the Big Welsh Walk – inspiring families to take to their feet for some quality family fun outdoors.

In England, Walking for Health, which is hosted by the Ramblers in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, will be inviting people across the country to join short, free and friendly walks with their local schemes, to help them get walking and stay active. It’s England’s national network of health walk schemes, offering free short walks over easy terrain led by trained walk leaders. The brainchild of GP Dr William Bird, who started leading health walks from his surgery in 1996, Walking for Health is now a national programme supporting around 600 local schemes across England that deliver a range of group walks for over 75,000 regular walkers.

Throughout Scotland, Wales and England, Ramblers’ groups will be extending invitations to join them on a variety of guided walks through countryside, cities and along the coast which are five miles or less. All of the walks will be led by trained walk leaders providing the perfect opportunity to discover the freedom, fresh air and fitness that comes with exploring the great outdoors.
